Mixed experience overall. The food was very tasty, but service was extremely slow. Was there on a Thursday evening, not super busy, and our food took about 30 minutes before it was ready. Some of our items had clearly sat for a while, and were either soggy or not warm enough anymore. With faster service this would have been a 5/5 but it seems like they might have some issues to work out
I checked out Bao Mama inside the downtown Oshawa food hall and was pleasantly surprised. The food hall itself is very clean and has a nice vibe. You can even watch the staff making the baos fresh, which is a cool touch. I tried a few items: • Chicken Bao – decent portion size (about the size of the palm of your hand or bigger, great value), though the bao wasn’t as fluffy as traditional ones. The fried chicken was good, but since it was dark meat, it wasn’t really my thing. • Fries – excellent! Crispy coating, perfectly cooked. I had them with hot sauce and they were addictive. • Birria Bao – this was the standout. Hearty portion, served with consomé on the side. The consomé was thick, flavorful, and delicious. The bao itself was seared on both sides, cheesy and gooey—almost like a bao-grilled-cheese fusion. Super creative and well executed. My only complaint was a huge chunk of fat in one bite of the meat, which threw me off, but otherwise the flavors were great. Service was quick and friendly, and overall I think Bao Mama is worth checking out if you’re in the area. The creativity in their menu and the portion sizes make it a solid spot to try.
I visited this location when they first opened but had never left a Google review. We were in the downtown core so we swung by! They are currently celebrating their 1 year anniversary with some delicious specials. We purchased the Best Seller Combo Pack for $20 which included OGC, BBQ Pork and Triple B. The OGC chicken was a huge hunk of tender juicy chicken. I couldn't believe how perfect this one was. The Braised Beef Brisket was flavorful and the BBQ Pork was delicious too. The Bao was so soft and fluffy. 100% highly recommended
Halo halo for $13! Sorry bu was so disappointed. Picture on menu was decieving . Ingredients are too little you cant even taste it! Its almost like all ice.
The premium halo halo was absolutely vile. Tasteless slush loaded with condensed milk. So many conflicting artificial flavors assault your tongue with a melodramatic cacophony of mediocrity. Hard pass.
I got the "Best Seller" - The OGC was completely overcooked, I couldn't even bite into it (Mind you, they were not busy at all, I was the only customer present) They also would not take my $20 bill that had a partial tear on top... the bill was over 51% intact which means it must be accepted at its full face value. It seemed like they didn't know what they were doing at all to be honest... Would not go back.
I tried Bao Mama in 2023 at a Food Truck Festival and loved it! I wanted more. Fast forward to July 2024 and they are now open in Oshawa! One of the BEST meals I’ve had in a LONG time. I had the Adobo Bao, Land and Sea Bao (Mushroom and Shrimp), Sinigang Fries, Siomai and Buko Pandan. Went all out and enjoyed EVERY single part of the meal. The sinigang fries are the best kind of fries I’ve had in my LIFE - no exaggeration. I think everything is fairly priced for the quality of the food you are getting. The Buko Pandan dessert costs ~ $11 which is a little steep, however it lives up to its price. On top of the tasty food, the hospitality was above and beyond. Director Anthony and Chef Nina both came to greet us at our table and chatted with my mom and I. I wish this business the ABSOLUTE best. Thank you for putting Filipino Fusion food and business on the market here in the Durham Region & GTA!
